Hundreds Displaced as Floods Hit Kisumu

Two families in Manyatta lost their homes, but no casualties were reported.

Following a heavy downpour in Western Kenya, flash floods have displaced hundreds of Kisumu families.

Two families in Manyatta lost their homes, but no casualties were reported.

Most rivers have breached their banks, affecting downstream families.

Locals in Nyalenda estate, which is located along the River Wigwa, which drains into Lake Victoria, have requested immediate assistance.

According to Jackson Nyaori, a village elder, the county and national governments must act quickly to rescue the affected families.

Nyaori noted that most families fled their homes last night as flash floods wreaked havoc.

He stated that they are facing water-borne diseases such as cholera, which he believes should be stopped by delivering medicines to the affected people.

“I appeal to the government to come to our aid by offering essential services to our people,” he said.

Another local, Washington Otieno, believes the river must be kept clean in order for water to flow freely into the lake.

Otieno suggested that the government should direct the Kazi Mtaani youth to clean up the river.

“In the past, the clean-up was done by the government, and we witnessed no flashfloods, we need more support,” he said.

Because most man-made bridges were washed away by the floods, most pupils did not report to school.

Heavy rains left a trail of destruction in some areas, bringing down mud-walled houses.
