ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan Accused of Misconduct Amidst Growing Controversies

Karim Ahmad Khan, the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor and former legal representative for Kenyan President William Ruto at the ICC, faces allegations of misconduct.

On October 24, the President of the ICC’s Assembly of State Parties acknowledged reports of Khan’s alleged misconduct towards an ICC staff member, confirming that the ICC’s Independent Oversight Mechanism (IOM) was handling the matter following a third-party complaint filed in May 2024.

The ICC maintains a “zero-tolerance” stance on workplace misconduct, including harassment and abuse of authority.

While Khan denied the accusations, stating he would fully cooperate with any required inquiries, he noted that his office has been subjected to “a wide range of attacks and threats.”

Khan’s tenure has faced additional challenges, including significant backlash following his issuance of arrest warrants in May 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza. Israeli supporters have strongly criticized these applications.

Khan also sought arrest warrants for key Hamas leaders, although they are reportedly no longer alive.

Previously, Khan represented President Ruto at the ICC during his trial for post-election violence charges, which were later dropped by the court, though an acquittal was not granted.
