Ichung’wah Denies Role in Protest Chaos, Blames Gachagua and Allies

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has strongly refuted accusations by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that he and other leaders were behind the violent protests that rocked parts of the country on June 25.

In a scathing statement, Ichung’wah described the claims as “absurd and shameless,” asserting that the unrest, which saw destruction of property, the burning of Kikuyu Law Courts, and attacks on private homes, was instigated by Gachagua’s own political allies.

“The only person responsible for Gachagua’s political downfall is Gachagua himself,” Ichung’wah said. “His allies are not victims; they are perpetrators charged in courts of law, with clear and damning evidence.”

He specifically pointed to the arrest of Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, a close associate of Gachagua, who was allegedly caught on video inciting looting during the protests. Ichung’wah argued that such incidents reflect a broader pattern of incitement and lawlessness fostered by the former deputy president’s inner circle.

Dismissing any involvement in the chaos, Ichung’wah challenged Gachagua to provide evidence linking him to the violence. “If he has an ounce of proof, let him take it to the ICC, the UN, or any forum of his choosing,” he said. “But don’t mistake accountability for persecution.”

The Majority Leader accused Gachagua of attempting to deflect blame and manipulate public opinion through fabricated narratives, including past allegations such as the alleged poisoning of a Member of Parliament.

“We will not allow criminals to pose as martyrs or anarchists to destabilize the nation for selfish political gain,” Ichung’wah warned. “Gachagua cannot weaponize lies to cleanse himself while dragging others into his political abyss.”

The exchange comes amid escalating political tensions within the ruling coalition, with growing public scrutiny over the government’s handling of protests and internal divisions.
