IEBC Denies Detained Ballot Papers Rumour

The IEBC received the first batch of ballot papers for senator, governor, and woman representative seats a week into July.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has denied reports that ballot papers were being held at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The electoral commission took to Twitter to deny the reports and set the record straight.

The Chebukati-led commission said in a tweet on Thursday evening that it had received stickers for labeling and distributing election materials.

“The correct position is that today morning the Commission received stickers to aid labelling and distribution of election materials. The JKIA security agencies in their normal procedure were trying to validate the stickers with the Commission,” the commission explained.

The IEBC received the first batch of ballot papers for senator, governor, and woman representative seats a week into July.

“We submitted over 16,100 names of candidates of the 21,000. The Government Printer has been having challenges finalising the Gazette Notice printing because it’s bulky but we hope it (printer) will finalise printing the Gazette Notice by end of today (Thursday),” said Mr Chebukati.

The total contract cost for the ballot papers, according to IEBC Chief Executive Officer Marjan Hussein Marjan, is 24 million euros (Sh3.2 billion), with the cost of printing a single ballot being Sh23 including Value Added Tax (VAT).
