IEBC Condemns Jacaranda Chaos, Calls on ODPP To Prosecute Perpetrators

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has urged the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the political campaign-related violence witnessed at Jacaranda grounds on Sunday evening.

In a statement, the Commission condemned the violence, calling it shameful for endangering Kenyans’ lives and property.

In ordinary circumstances, IEBC says it would have promptly investigated and summoned the suspected perpetrators of the heinous violence were it not for judicial orders declaring the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee unconstitutional, and thereby withdrawing from the Commission the constitutional and statutory power to enforce the said Code.

Meanwhile, the Commission has urged all candidates and political parties to run peaceful campaigns and to stick to their campaign schedules as submitted to the Returning Officers.

On Sunday, June 19, the Kenya Kwanza team encountered hostile youths in Embakasi who stoned their vehicles, causing chaos and injuring several people.

While Kenya Kwanza has blamed Embakasi East MP Babu Owino for the violence, Babu insists that the whole thing was stage managed by Kenya Kwanza.
