The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) confirms that, by midnight of 25th June 2022, it had received party lists from 81 Political Parties out of the 83 cleared to participate in the August 9, General Elections.
The two political parties that did not submit their party lists are the Forum for Republican Democracy (Ford Asili) and the Ukweli Party.
This is in accordance with Commission guidelines, which required all political parties participating in the August 9 elections to submit names of nominees to the National Assembly, Senate, and county assemblies by June 25.
For the National Assembly, each party is required to submit the names of 12 nominees.
Sixteen women nominees, two persons living with disability and two youth nominees are also required for the Senate.
The actual nomination slots for each party will be determined by the seats won in the August elections.
Top party officials Saturday remained tight-lipped on those whose names had been included in the list amid speculation that some outfits had omitted names of popular politicians who they had promised to nominate after losing party primaries.
The Commission said that it will review the party lists within fourteen days of receipt to ascertain their compliance with the requirements of the Constitution, the Elections Act and Regulations.
“Political Parties whose party list(s) or nominee(s) will not be compliant shall be informed and allowed to resubmit their party list(s) or nominee(s) within seven days from the date they were rejected,” the IEBC stated.
Nominations have always been a controversial affair with party honchos accused of rewarding their cronies and relatives with the slots.
