The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has extended the deadline for submitting names of Presidential Candidates and their Deputies to the commission to May 16th, 2022.

The meeting between IEBC and political parties which took place on Tuesday agreed on a two-week extension from the initial April 28.

Speaking to the media outside the IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi, the commission’s Chair Wafula Chebukati also stated that the same deadline applies to the submission of names of Governor aspirants and their Deputies.

“The date for submission of aspirants’ lists for presidential candidates and deputies as well as gubernatorial candidates and deputies will be on 16th of May next month,” he said.

However, Chebukati stated that the deadline for submitting names for aspirants for members of the National Assembly, Woman Representatives, Senate, and members of County Assembly remains Thursday, April 28.

“We have agreed that the deadline for submission of names for aspirants to the commission for four elective positions, Members of National Assembly, the Senate, Woman Representatives, and Members of County Assembly remains the 28th of April,” he said.

He stated that this will make it easier for the commission to submit the names for approval as required by Chapter Six of the Constitution.

“Independent candidates who are vying as presidential candidates and Governor Candidates will also submit their names on May 16,” Chebukati said.

Chebukati called a crisis meeting on Tuesday to discuss the running mate deadline after both coalitions, Azimio and Kenya Kwanza, protested the Thursday deadline.
