IEBC Sets 3 Panels to Hear Disputes

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission on Saturday established three panels to hear arguments over the recently completed Registration of Candidates for various elective offices.

According to IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, who presided over the launch of the Commission Dispute Resolution Committee Hearings at the Milimani Law Courts 262 complaints have been made so far.

He stated that the IEBC is in charge of resolving electoral disputes, including those connected to or originating from nominations, but not election petitions or challenges after election results are declared.

“The Dispute Resolution Committee will hold its hearings for the next 10 days at Milimani Law Courts, each panel will deliver rulings within 48 hours of hearing,” he said.

This is in accordance with Section 74 of the Elections Act, which states that electoral disputes must be resolved within ten days of being filed with the Commission.

Chebukati, the Presidential Returning Officer, will not be a member of any of the panels.

Each of the three empanelled Dispute Resolution Committee Panels will have a Presiding Chairperson, Committee Members, and Panel Secretaries.
