IEBC Sets Dates For Kandara, Garissa Township and Elgeyo Marakwet By-elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set January 5, 2023 as the date for by-elections in the Garissa Township and Kandara constituencies, as well as the Elgeyo Marakwet Senate seats.

Former Garissa Township MP Aden Duale, ex-Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, and Alice Wahome (Kandara) resigned from their MP seats to join the Cabinet, prompting National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Senate counterpart Amason Kingi to declare the seats vacant.

Aden Duale resigned from his position as Garissa Town MP to become Defense CS.

Kipchumba Murkomen, CS Roads and Transportation, was appointed after resigning as Senator for Elgeyo Marakwet.

After being appointed as the Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation CS, Alice Wahome, the immediate Kandara MP, also resigned.

On Thursday, the CSs were sworn in and returned to their respective ministries.

Chebukati stated that each political party intending to run in the by-elections must submit the names of those running in a party primary as well as the date of the party primary by November 14, 2022.

He also stated that public officers who wish to run for office must resign within seven days of the Speaker declaring a vacancy.
