The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned that parties that do not follow the two-thirds gender principle will be barred from running in the general election in 2022.

According to a press release issued on Thursday, May 5, the commission received a list of nominated candidates for the position of members of the National Assembly and Senate from 81 political parties respectively on 28th April 2022.

“Upon review of the lists of nominated candidates, the Commission observed that Forty Eight (48) political parties that submitted lists of nominated candidates for Members of Senate, and Thirty Eighty (38) political parties that submitted lists of nominated candidates for Members of National Assembly were compliant and met the two-thirds gender principle,” the statement read.

As a result, the IEBC has urged all political parties that have yet to comply with the two-thirds gender rule to submit a revised list by Monday, May 9, 2022, at noon, or they will be barred from participating in the 2022 general election.

“Non-compliant political parties will not participate in the 2022 General Election for the said elective positions,” the commission added.

The IEBC also informed the public that the voter register is being verified and provided information on how to confirm if their information is correct.

“The Public is further informed that the Verification of Register of Voters exercise commenced yesterday 4th May, 2022 for a period of 30 days,” IEBC said.

It also stated that Kenyans can also confirm their details via SMS by sending their ID/Passport number to 70000 or visit the Commission website portal
