The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has verified a total of 1.14 Million signatures submitted by the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce.
In a press statement, the IEBC said 1,140,845 registered voters validly appended signatures to support the BBI.
The commission said it subjected the signatures to rigorous validity checks, effectively sorting out the 1.7 Million signatures submitted, before coming up with 1.14 Million valid signatures.
“This is therefore to notify stakeholders and the general public that the Initiative has met the requisite threshold as provided in Article 257 (4) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.” IEBC statement read.
Now the bill has been passed on to its next stage, where the county assemblies are set to debate within 3 months.
“Pursuant to Article 257 (5) and (6) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, the Commission shall submit the draft Bill to each of the fourty seven (47) County Assemblies for consideration within three (3) months from the date of submission by the Commission.”
Thereafter, the Speakers of the County Assemblies will submit the decisions of their respective County Assemblies to the Speakers of the National Assembly and the Senate pursuant to Article 257 (6) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
