Juliana Cherera: Results Declared By Chebukati Belong To Himself, Not IEBC

She added that they also rejected the results since the final tally was announced in the absence of results from certain constituencies.

Four Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioners, led by Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, have come out to explain why they rejected results declaring Deputy President William Ruto as the president-elect.

The four rejected the outcome of the presidential election on August 9 and promised to provide a detailed explanation of what happened during the counting of votes.

In a press statement read by Cherera on Tuesday at Serena Hotel, the commissioners said the aggregation of the percentages of the results were a mathematical absurdity that defy logic.

They said that the summation of percentages of votes awarded to each to each of the four presidential candidates exceeded 100 percent.

“This summation gives us a total of 100.01 percent. This translates to approximately 142,000 votes which will make a significant difference in the final results,” Cherera said.

Cherera stated that they declined to acknowledge the results because the accuracy of the source of the figures tallied was not comprehensive.

“When we demanded that we verify the results, the chairman refused and insisted on declaring and announcing the results,” she added.

She maintained that the results did not indicate the total number of registered voters, voters cast and rejected votes in this regard and they lacked a critical ingredient naming a total number of total votes cast.

“The percentage is a total of all numbers  7.7 million of Ruto translates to 50.49% then it was 50.49 of what? Take notice Chebukati says Raila attained 25% of votes in 34 counties while Ruto attained 25% in 39 counties. Which figures constituted the variables of the percentages,” Cherera posed.

“We concluded that the process that went into the generation of Form 34 C used to declare Ruto was opaque. Guided by the authority of the Maina Kiai case as upheld by the Supreme Court in 2017, we state categorically that the results of the elections declared by Chebukati belong to himself and do not represent that of IEBC,” she added.

They said the law requires all the seven commissioners to approve the final results of a presidential election for it to be credible.

She added that they also rejected the results since the final tally was announced in the absence of results from certain constituencies.
