IG Kanja Attends Thanksgiving Ceremony in Nyeri Sparking Public Scrutiny

The Inspector General of the National Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja, joined the Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, Mr. Felix Koskei, alongside other senior government officials and members of the Catholic Church, for a thanksgiving ceremony held in honour of the Principal Secretary for Gender, Anne Wang’ombe, in Nyeri County.

In his address, the Inspector General reaffirmed the National Police Service’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Kenyans, residents, and visitors. He emphasised that security is a shared responsibility, requiring collaborative efforts between the police and the public.

This attendance follows a period of intense scrutiny for IG Kanja in the region.

In November 2025, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) called for his resignation after he attended a presidential event in Kieni, Nyeri, which critics labeled a political rally. The National Police Service (NPS) defended his presence as standard security protocol.

IG Kanja recently faced heavy criticism from leaders like former DP Rigathi Gachagua following a teargas incident at ACK Witima Church in Othaya during a previous thanksgiving service in January 2026.

Among those present at the event were Cabinet Secretary Ms. Hannah Wendot Cheptumo, Secretary to the Cabinet Ms. Mercy Wanjau, and Principal Secretaries Mr. Alex Wachira, Mr. Patrick Kilemi, Ms. Betsy Njagi, Ms. Mary Muthoni, Mr. John Mbugua, Dr. Salome Beacco, Mr. Elijah Mwangi, Mr. Joseph Motari, and Dr. Aurelia Rono.

Also in attendance was the Kilifi Woman Representative, Ms. Gertrude Mbeyu, together with parastatal directors, chief executive officers, and other leaders.
