IG Kanja Hosts South Sudan Human Rights Delegation in Nairobi

By Michelle Ndaga

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on Tuesday hosted a high-level delegation from the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan (CHRSS) at his Jogoo House ‘A’ office in Nairobi.

The delegation, led by Commissioner Barney Afako, included CHRSS Coordinator Peter Mwesigwa and Economic Crimes Adviser Daniel Pearson. Their visit forms part of a broader consultative process ahead of the Commission’s forthcoming report on South Sudan’s human rights situation.

According to CHRSS, the report will evaluate the current status, challenges, and opportunities for strengthening the protection of social and economic rights seen as critical to fostering sustainable peace and stability in the country.

The team emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration with regional partners and institutions, particularly through the exchange of information and regular briefings to ensure well-aligned recommendations.

IG Kanja welcomed the delegation and assured them of his support in overcoming challenges facing human rights promotion in the region. He reaffirmed the National Police Service’s (NPS) commitment to strengthening human rights protections and promoting peace not only in Kenya and South Sudan but across the wider East African region.

Senior police officials who joined the discussions included the Principal Assistant to the IG, Mr. Mathew Kutoh, SAIG; NPS Director of Human Capital Development, Dr. Mwangi Wanderi, SAIG; NPS Director of Corporate Communication, Mr. Muchiri Nyaga, AIG; and Ms. Joan Korir, ASP, from the Directorate of Legal.
