IGAD to Launch Regional Pandemic Preparedness and Response Project in Kampala, Uganda

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) will officially launch its Pandemic Preparedness and Response (PREPARE) Project from 25–29 August 2025 in Kampala, Uganda. The initiative aims to strengthen health security across the IGAD region and improve readiness for epidemics and pandemics.

Funded by the Pandemic Fund, the PREPARE Project focuses on key public health areas including cross-border surveillance, laboratory capacity, health workforce development, and multi-sectoral coordination.

Implemented in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) as delivery partner, the project has already provided targeted support for the Mpox outbreak, particularly in high-risk border areas.

These early interventions have enhanced surveillance, laboratory capabilities, workforce skills, and coordination mechanisms to reduce transmission and mortality while ensuring vulnerable communities are not left behind.

The week-long launch will follow the One Region, One Health Response approach and will feature high-level dialogues, technical consultations, and the official project inauguration.

The event will bring together leaders, technical experts, and policymakers from all IGAD Member States, offering a platform to share best practices, foster collaboration, and advance policy dialogue to boost regional resilience against public health emergencies.

IGAD emphasizes that the project reflects its commitment to the principle that “Preparedness Saves Lives” and seeks to ensure no one in the region is left behind in the face of future pandemics.
