The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has called for a shift from fragmented responses to a more coordinated and proactive approach to early warning and conflict prevention in Africa.
Speaking during the 4th Policy Session of the African Union Inter-Regional Knowledge Exchange (I-RECKE) on Early Warning and Conflict Prevention, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu emphasized the importance of strengthening linkages between regional and continental systems.
Dr. Workneh urged all Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms to fully utilize the I-RECKE platform as a space for structured and transformative collaboration in the face of emerging security threats.
“Africa’s security will be shaped not only by how early we detect threats, but by how boldly and collectively we act to prevent them,” he stated, reaffirming IGAD’s commitment to early warning systems that move beyond threat detection to enable timely, united action to safeguard peace.
The I-RECKE platform, spearheaded by the African Union, serves as a collaborative hub for RECs and regional bodies to share knowledge, align strategies, and strengthen joint efforts in conflict prevention and peacebuilding across the continent.
