I&M Bank continued to expand its reach in the Coast region with a new branch opened in Mtwapa.
The branch, ninth in the Coast region, was opened along the Mombasa Malindi Highway on Saturday 1st March 2025.
Speaking during the opening of the Mtwapa Branch, I&M Bank Kenya CEO Gul Khan said the new branch targets small businesses in Mtwapa with products like the free bank to M-Pesa transactions.
“We should have opened in Mtwapa a long time ago but we did not have the right products. Now we have the free bank to M-Pesa transfers, short-term loans for individuals and small businesses, and agri products for people in agriculture,” said CEO Khan.
“We have a lot of Export Processing Zones (EPZ) here and want to be part of the community,” he added.
According to Shameer Patel, I&M Bank General Manager-Personal & Business Banking, I&M Mtwapa has been strategically located to tap into business brought about by the expansion of the Mombasa-Malindi Highway.
“We are in Mombasa because we believe there is a lot of economic activity that we can support here and help the community. With this road’s expansion, we expect this whole corridor to expand the economy in the region,” said Patel.
“It was high time for us to come here and see what we can do to support our customers, old and new, existing in the region,” he added.
According to Stanley Gachoki, Head of Distribution at I&M Bank, the bank has tailor-made products for their customers, including short-term loans for salaried employees, especially the ones on the EPZ corridor.
“We have exciting propositions for our start-up businesses, sole proprietorship, we have exciting products for personal banking, salaried employees and we believe that tailor-made products ease the onboarding of customers for us,” said Gachoki.
The Mtwapa branch is the bank’s ninth branch on the coast. The bank has a branch in Diani, Kilifi, Nyali, Changamwe, Malindi, Watamu, and two branches in Mombasa Town.
“This branch is quick access, even the location speaks to that because if you are driving towards Vipingo or even Mombasa, you can quickly pop in, do your banking, and drive out,” said Gachoki.
It is a container branch fully powered by solar.
Also at the launch was Aboud Said, Chairman Kenya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mombasa Branch.
Aboud said: “Today we are not only celebrating the opening of a branch but a big milestone for the community and I&M Bank. This calls to show, as a testament, the growing potential of Mombasa and the Coast.”
