‘I’m On Site’, Murkomen Responds to Public Outcry Over Southern Bypass

Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has responded to complaints about the bumps erected along the Southern Bypass in Nairobi.

In a post on Wednesday, October 4, CS Murkomen assured that he was following up on the issue and that he would issue a statement on the concerns raised.

“I am on site, I will revert,” said Murkomen.

This comes after reports of fatal road accidents caused by speed bumps said to have been recently erected on the highway.

Several X users took to the social media platform to share images of accidents that occurred after motorists hit the bumps unknowingly since Wednesday, October 4.

An X user named @Emmelye issued a warning to other drivers, stating that a fatal crash occurred on Tuesday afternoon, followed by another accident late in the evening.

“This morning at 6:30 someone veered off and crashed a pedestrian and hit the NHC wall. bumps on both sides,” the post added, referring to the Nairobi Housing Corporation in Lang’ata.

There have also been complaints of a lack of appropriate road signage, rumble strips and adequate lighting on the bypass, which runs across the southwest of Nairobi, from Mombasa Road through Lang’ata to Kikuyu.

“Whoever uses Southern bypass be aware. Kenya’s finest engineers decided to put bumps on the highway. Already seen three accidents today… proceed with caution,” X user Mutindi Mutua posted.
