An Indian national facing charges of stealing over Ksh 254 million has lost his attempt to have his Ksh 3M cash bail reduced.
The suspect, Cheekati Narasimha Rao, accused of embezzling Ksh 254,461,768 between January 2016 and August 2024, had sought a review of his bond terms before Magistrate Carolyne Mugo at Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.
He requested a reduction from Ksh 3 million to a lower amount, citing health concerns.
Through his lawyer, Wanyama, Cheekati argued that his medical condition cannot allow him spend a night in police cells.
However, the magistrate rejected his application, stating that she cannot review her own ruling.
Subsequently, Advocate Kimani Wachira, representing the complainant, objected the request, arguing that Cheekati had previously attempted to flee the court’s jurisdiction.
He asserted that such actions disqualified him from being granted lenient bond terms.
Wachira further urged the court to order Cheekati to surrender his passport in court to prevent any potential escape while the case proceeds.
In her ruling, the court maintained the bond terms, granting Cheekati a Ksh 10 million bond with an alternative cash bail of Ksh 3 million.
Additionally, he was directed to deposit his passport in the court’s safe custody.
In the case, Cheekati is charged with stealing by servant where the prosecution alleged that he allegedly stole the money in question by virtue of his employment at Printing Services Limited.
He is also charged with forgery where he is accused of forging the signature of Malkiat Sigh Dhillon on a letter of appointment by promoting himself to the position of production manager of the company.
