As plans to use the Green Park bus terminal begin, the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has put in place a traffic flow strategy that will apply to all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) traveling into Nairobi from the south and south-west.
The Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan (NIUPLAN), which is a multi-agency project aimed at ensuring a dependable and efficient transportation system in the city, includes the Green Park Terminal (GPT).
NMS Director Roads Transport and Public Works Eng. Michael Ochieng said the Terminal aims to decongest the CBD, reduce travel time, improve commuter experiences, and encourage the use of public transportation over private transport during a transport stakeholders’ forum at Green Park Terminal in Nairobi.
He said that the ongoing NIUPLAN project includes relocating railway terminus to Green Park, the establishment of Park Roads Terminus adjacent to Desai Service Road, the addition of pedestrian walkways and roads, and construction of additional Non-Motorized Transport lanes.
Eng. Ochieng stated that NMS has put into place a traffic movement plan which will apply to all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) coming to the city from the South and South-West of Nairobi.
“All PSVs accessing the CBD through Langata Road shall turn left and join Raila Odinga way up to City mortuary roundabout, join Ngong Road into Haile Selassie Avenue near NHIF and deploy extreme left along entry lane into GPT,” he said.
He added that all other traffic vehicles that do not fit the definition of PSV shall continue to use their preferred routes.
The Director explained that Non-Motorized Transport Corridors have been constructed for safe pedestrian movement into and out of the terminal through Haile Selassie Roundabout, Parliament Road, Intercontinental, and General Post Office Roundabout.
He noted the improvement and the positive changes, especially in Upper Hill and Kenyatta Avenue roads and commended the contractors on their good work.
