The Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), Mr. Douglas Kanja, joined the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, today, 23rd March 2026, for an extensive assessment of the security situation in Meru County and the surrounding areas.
The CS was briefed on the intelligence-led operation that was recently launched to decisively deal with banditry in Meru and the surrounding areas to pave way for lasting peace and development.

In his address, CS Murkomen urged the multi-agency security team to protect life and property by responding swiftly and dealing firmly and resolutely with criminals across the entire region.
He pledged his full support for the operation, including beefing up the numbers of National Police Reservists and pursuing disarmament in efforts to eradicate the menace.
Furthermore, the CS urged local leaders and residents to support security agencies and share criminal intelligence, emphasising that security is a critical shared responsibility.

For his part, the IG commended the officers for their commitment and sacrifice and urged them to strengthen their efforts in addressing cattle rustling and all forms of criminal activity within the region.
IG Kanja added that more police officers will be deployed to boost numbers to ensure that peace and security is quickly restored in the area.
Dignitaries present during the meeting were the Governor of Meru County, H.E. Hon. Rev. Mutuma M’Ethingia; the Governor of Isiolo County, H.E. Dr. Abdi Ibrahim Guyo; the Women Representative for Isiolo County, Hon. Bonaya Mumina; and Members of Parliament from Igembe North, Igembe Central, Tigania West and Tigania East, among other leaders.

Also in attendance were the Regional Commissioner for the Eastern Region, Mr. Paul Rotich; APS Director of Security Operations, Mr. Jackson Kangani, SAIG; Commandant of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), Mr. Joseph Limo, SAIG; Regional Police Commander for the Eastern Region, Mr. Hillary Birgen, AIG; APS Eastern Regional Commander, Mr. Michael Owino, CP; Eastern RCIO, Mr. Micheal Sang, CP; SOOPS GSU, Mr. Ernest Cheruiyot, CP; Personal Assistant to the IG, Mr. James Murithi, CP; and County Police Commander for Meru, Mr. Moses Mutisya, CP, among other senior officers.
