Instagram Rolls Out Reposting, Location Map, and Friends Tab in Latest Update

Instagram is introducing a new wave of features aimed at making it easier for users to share content and stay connected, parent company Meta announced on August 6. The update brings three major additions, a reposting function, a location-sharing map, and a new Friends tab in Reels.

“People have always come to Instagram to share what they’re up to and where they are. Now, with reposts, the map, and the ‘Friends’ tab in Reels, it’s easier for you and your friends to stay in touch through the content you’re enjoying,” Meta said in a statement.

The new tools follow recent safety upgrades, including July’s expanded protections for teen users in direct messaging and June’s profile grid reorganization feature.

Reposting Feature
Similar to the repost option on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram users can now share public feed posts and video reels created by others. Reposts will appear both in followers’ feeds and in a dedicated “Reposts” tab on a user’s profile. While the original creator is credited, the feature allows their content to reach a broader audience. Meta says this will help creators expand their visibility and engagement.

Location Map
Launching first in the U.S., the Instagram Map lets users share their current or recent location with selected accounts. The setting can be turned off at any time. The map also offers location-based content discovery, showcasing friends’ posts from concerts, restaurants, and other venues. Parents using supervision tools can control whether their teen has access to location sharing and will be notified if it’s activated.

Friends Tab in Reels
The new Friends tab in Instagram Reels surfaces public content that friends have liked or commented on, as well as recommendations from shared “Blends.” Users can hide their activity from appearing in friends’ tabs or mute updates from specific accounts.

The rollout underscores Instagram’s push to combine social interaction, content discovery, and safety features, keeping users engaged while addressing privacy concerns.
