Interior PS Raymond Omollo urges political leaders to remain lawful in public gatherings

Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo has called on the political class to adhere to the law on public gatherings in the wake of ongoing rallies by various political groupings in the country.

Speaking in Kisumu on Sunday during a boda boda empowerment event, PS Omollo has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding constitutional freedoms like right to assemble however such must be done within the allowed parameters.

He says public meetings and demonstrations must be conducted within the legal frameworks, including timely notification of the police.

PS Omollo said Kenya is governed by the rule of law adding that everyone has the right to assemble and express themselves.

He has however cautioned against intimidation and disruption affirming that those who will contravene such will be dealt with as per the law.

“Every Kenyan is free to engage and publicly meet any Kenyan but it has to be done within the confines of the law. We will protect the rights of every Kenyan where you are agitating for something through or agaisnt the government. No one should feel threatened or no one should threaten anybody,” he said.

PS Omollo further called on the riders to shy away from being misused by the political class to cause chaos, asserting that President William Ruto’s administration is keen on empowering the group to ensure that they are self-dependent since the sector employs a huge number of youths.

“We need to support the president in helping the youth. Let us support the youth empowerment programmes,” he noted.

This comes as the Linda Mwananchi brigade and the United Opposition have made allegations regarding plans by the government to disrupt their gatherings.They have accused PS Omollo and his boss Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen of supporting goon deployment to political gatherings held by dissenting politicians.
