IPOA Goes After Police Officers Over Butere Girls Drama Festival Chaos

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the conduct of police officers during the National Drama Festivals held at Lions Primary School in Nakuru, where incidents of excessive force were reported.

According to a press statement by IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan, officers from the authority were deployed to the venue early Thursday morning following prior indications that oversight would be necessary.

The presence of minors at the event further necessitated IPOA’s intervention.

By 5:00 a.m., IPOA’s team had arrived at the venue, where they encountered a heavy police presence comprising officers from the Kenya Police Service (KPS), Administration Police Service (APS), and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), all armed and stationed at the main entrance.

Tensions escalated at around 7:00 a.m. when a bus carrying students from Butere Girls arrived. IPOA observed disturbing scenes, including the use of tear gas at the venue.

Reports have also emerged alleging police used force against journalists, students, teachers, and members of the public.

“IPOA urges the police to act with professionalism when managing public order,” the statement read, reaffirming the authority’s commitment to holding accountable any officer found culpable.

The Authority stated it will recommend criminal prosecution or disciplinary action where necessary, and submit its findings to relevant authorities.

IPOA reiterated its commitment to impartiality and fairness, stating that its investigations aim to ensure police accountability in line with Article 244 of the Constitution.
