The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into a shooting that killed two men on Sunday in Murang’a County.
According to a press release issued by IPOA chairperson Anne Makori on Monday, the Murang’a County Commander, Ali Nuno, notified the authority of the incident as required by law.
According to the statement, IPOA determined that police action was a factor in the loss of life and dispatched a Rapid Response Team from Nairobi to join its regional investigators in Nyeri.
“The Authority shall take appropriate action including recommending to the Director of Public Prosecutions the prosecution of any person found culpable. In all its investigations, IPOA is impartial, fair and transparent,” the statement read.
The IPOA’s statement comes after the Director of Criminal Investigations’ tweet elicited mixed reactions on social media.
The suspect was shot dead in the tweet, which has since been deleted.
The DCI claimed in the deleted tweet that the two armed robbers engaged in a shoot-out with the officers during the 9 a.m. operation.
Kenyans on social media, however, are questioning why an image whose source has yet to be verified depicted the suspects handcuffed and surrounded by police officers.
Many people wondered when the handcuffed suspects engaged police in a shootout that resulted in their deaths.
