IPOA: Police Homicide Cases Hit 65

Written By Gerald Gekara | |

There have been 57-65 cases of Police murders and suicides between 2016 and 2022, IPOA now reports.

This was according to a presentation by Mrs Anne Makori, Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, during a lecture to newly promoted police officers.

The majority of the homicides took place in Nairobi and Garissa, which each had eight occurrences, followed by West Pokot, which had seven.

Mrs. Makori said: “One officer lost is too many. Look at the pattern and it does not look good at all. One of the things that will confront you is that the officers under your command have a lot of issues both personal and official some of which often overwhelm them. Therefore, as you give commands, take note of the welfare of your officers. As bosses, you need to find out why these cases are happening.”

She has urged recently promoted police commanders to implement recommendations aimed at reducing the high rate of homicides and suicides in the Service.

She addressed at the Kiganjo Campus of the National Police Training College in Nyeri County.

She presided over two events when she was there: she closed an Inspectorate training for non-commissioned officers and a presentation to special police commanders.
