IPOA provides findings on probe of deaths during protests

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has issued an update on the fatal shooting of Rex Kanyike Masai during the anti-finance bill protests on June 20, 2024.

In a statement on Wednesday, June 26, IPOA said it attended the postmortem examination and obtained reports on the cause of Masai’s death.

“Attended the post-mortem and obtained the report on the cause of death, recorded witness statements, visited and documented the crime scene including the collection of evidence, analysed CCTV and other video footage of the incident, obtained necessary police documents, has summoned various officers to record statements, submitted various samples for forensic and ballistics analysis pending task, obtaining expert reports, recording more witness accounts and investigation report compilation,” Ipoa said.

On the death of Evans Kiritu, IPOA said it attended his post-mortem on Wednesday at KNH, recorded statements, and is establishing contacts and recording more witness accounts of the incident.

At the same time, IPOA said it is monitoring the fatal shooting of protestors in Nairobi and other parts of the country and the use of excessive force during the Tuesday protests.

“Pursuant to Section 5 and Section 25 of the IPOA Act, the Authority has launched investigations into these incidents in fulfillment of its mandate of holding police accountable to the public in the performance of their functions,” IPOA stated.

The authority pointed out that it must analyze all available information on its investigations into various incidents observed during the demonstrations in line with its mandate of guarding public interest in policing.

Ipoa said it remains independent, impartial, fair and apolitical in all its investigations.
