Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated sharply following conflicting accounts over a reported search-and-rescue mission involving a downed American fighter jet crew member.

Iran’s military said on Sunday that it destroyed three U.S. aircraft allegedly involved in the operation in southern Isfahan.

According to a statement from the country’s central command, Khatam al-Anbiya, the aircraft—identified as two Black Hawk helicopters and one C-130 military transport plane—were struck and left burning in the desert.

“The enemy’s intruding aircraft in southern Isfahan… were struck and are now burning,” the statement said, adding that the rescue operation had “failed.”

Iranian state media circulated images purportedly showing charred wreckage scattered across a barren landscape, with smoke rising from the crash site.

Local reports also indicated that at least five people were killed during the strikes in southwestern Iran, though it remains unclear whether the casualties were civilians or military personnel.

The reported incident comes amid an ongoing effort by both Iran and the United States to locate a second crew member of a downed F-15E fighter jet.

Since Friday, Iranian outlets have broadcast footage of local residents participating in search efforts, with some individuals reportedly offered rewards for information on the missing pilot.

However, the U.S. account of events differs significantly.

U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier on Sunday that the missing crew member had been successfully recovered in a search-and-rescue operation.

In a brief statement, he described the officer as “safe and sound,” suggesting that the mission had achieved its objective despite the circumstances.

Washington has not confirmed Iran’s claims regarding the destruction of its aircraft, and there has been no immediate independent verification of the reported shootdowns.

The starkly opposing narratives highlight the difficulty of establishing facts in fast-moving military situations, particularly between long-standing adversaries.

Analysts note that both sides may be seeking to shape public perception by emphasizing favorable aspects of the incident.

Isfahan, where the alleged confrontation occurred, is considered a strategically sensitive region within Iran, hosting key military and infrastructure facilities.

Any foreign military activity in the area would represent a significant escalation.

As of now, the situation remains fluid, with international observers awaiting further confirmation from independent sources.

The incident raises fresh concerns about the potential for miscalculation and wider conflict between the two nations.
