Iran has executed a man accused of spying for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, state media reported on Wednesday, marking the latest in a string of executions tied to Tehran’s long-running shadow war with its regional rival.

The man, identified as Babak Shahbazi, was accused of working with Esmaeil Fekri, another Iranian executed in June for allegedly spying for Israel since early 2022.

Authorities said Shahbazi exploited his position as a contractor installing cooling systems to gather intelligence from sensitive facilities, including server rooms and sites linked to the military and security services.

His lawyer had sought an appeal to the Supreme Court, but the request was rejected, according to the report.

Executions of Iranians convicted of espionage for Israel have surged this year, with at least nine carried out in recent months. Iranian officials say such operations are aimed at dismantling Mossad-linked networks accused of facilitating sabotage and intelligence-gathering inside the country.

Tehran and Tel Aviv have been locked in a decades-long covert struggle, with Iran frequently accusing Israel of assassinations, sabotage of nuclear facilities, and cyberattacks on its infrastructure.
