Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo Survives Impeachment, Senate Urges Reconciliation

Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo survived an impeachment attempt on Tuesday after the Senate voted to uphold his objections against the County Assembly’s motion for his removal. By a vote of 31 to 12, Senators sided with Guyo, allowing him to remain in office.

At the heart of the governor’s defense was the question of whether the Isiolo County Assembly held lawful sittings on June 18 and June 26 to debate and pass the impeachment motion. The Senate agreed with Guyo that the proceedings were procedurally flawed.

Despite the outcome, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi issued a stern warning to Governor Guyo, urging him to mend political rifts within the county. “This is not a win, and the Senate does not expect you to go out there chest-thumping,” said Kingi. “Clearly, there are cracks in the walls of Isiolo County. If I were you, I’d go mend those cracks.”

Kingi also encouraged Guyo to reconcile with his Senator and members of the County Assembly, warning that the case could return if tensions persist.

The County Assembly had accused Governor Guyo of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and constitutional violations. Specific allegations included stalling key development projects, failing to meet revenue targets, bloating the county executive by appointing 36 advisors and 31 chief officers, and issuing short-term contracts that reportedly fostered instability within the administration.

Notably, the impeachment proceedings went ahead despite an active court order prohibiting the Assembly from moving forward with the process.

With the Senate’s decision offering a temporary reprieve, political observers now await whether Guyo will use the opportunity to rebuild consensus or face renewed challenges to his leadership.
