Ivorian Fugitive Extradited from Kenya to U.S. in Firearms Smuggling Case

By Were Kelly

In a significant demonstration of international judicial cooperation, Kenyan authorities have successfully extradited an Ivorian national to the United States to face charges of conspiring to smuggle firearms. Bile Jean Philippe Assemian, who was wanted by American law enforcement, was repatriated on September 25, 2025, following a swift and conclusive legal process in Nairobi.

The case against Assemian stems from a grand jury indictment issued in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio on May 28, 2025.

The indictment detailed allegations that between October and November 2018, Assemian and his accomplices engaged in a conspiracy to purchase firearms in the United States, primarily in the states of Ohio and Maryland.

The stated intention of this scheme was to illegally export the weapons to Côte d’Ivoire, circumventing American export laws. As a result of these charges, the U.S. government secured an INTERPOL Red Notice, categorizing Assemian as a fugitive wanted for prosecution and alerting police forces worldwide to his status.

The formal extradition mechanism was activated on July 24, 2025, when the Kenyan Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), acting through the Central Authority unit within the Office of the Attorney General, received a formal request from the United States for Assemian’s arrest and extradition.

The wheels of justice began turning immediately, with extradition proceedings commencing at the Nairobi Chief Magistrate’s Court on July 25. The court proceedings were notably efficient, concluding on September 3 when the magistrate issued an extradition order.

This ruling legally paved the way for Kenyan authorities to transfer Assemian into the custody of awaiting U.S. officials.

The Kenyan state’s case was prosecuted by a team of lawyers from the DPP’s office, including Vincent Monda, Allen Mulama, Duncan Ondimu, Magdalene Nduati, and Fatma Shaban. Their work ensured that the extradition adhered strictly to the requirements of the treaty between the two nations.
