The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has strongly condemned the violence witnessed during a Kenya Kwanza rally in Nairobi County.
The Commission’s Chairman, Samuel Kobia, stated in a statement that an investigation has been launched and that those involved in organizing and carrying out the chaos will be arrested.
He urged all political parties to commit themselves, their members, and supporters to “political decency during this critical period in our country.”
“We hereby put politicians on notice that this is not the time for violence as a means of political mobilization. As a country and as the NCIC, we remain committed to achieving political decency in the 2022 general elections,” he said. “We shall not tolerate the political thuggery exhibited at Jacaranda Grounds yesterday.”
Wafula Chebukati, chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has urged Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji to prosecute those responsible for the violence at Sunday’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance rally in Jacaranda.
Chebukati cited the commission’s lack of jurisdiction to enforce the electoral code of conduct, so the matter was referred to the DPP’s office.
His statement comes just hours after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) urged the IEBC to consider taking action against those responsible for inciting violence at the rally.
