Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwour alias Jalang’o now claims that the proposed 15% tax in the Finance Bill 2023 is the fault of content creators.
According to Jalang’o, content creators have no reason not to pay taxes because they constantly flaunt their wealth on social media.
He claims that the majority of them claim to be millionaires.
On his YouTube channel on Friday, Jalang’o insisted that the 15% tax proposal was inspired by content creators.
There is a proposal in the Finance Bill 2023 to impose a 15% withholding tax on digital content monetization.
“How do I persuade the government or people who don’t understand content creation that content creators don’t have money and are unable to pay the 15% tax when you show out there that you are millionaires?” he asked.
Jalang’o, who is also a content creator, stated that colleagues have approached him to negotiate with the government to have the proposal removed.
He stated that it was difficult for him to stand in front of the panel and inform them that content creators are unable to pay taxes.
The legislator went on to say that content creators should come up with a counter-proposal on how much they are willing to pay because the government will ensure the bill passes.
