Job Well Done—Murkomen Lauds Police for ‘Calm’ Saba Saba

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has praised security agencies for what he termed a “markedly peaceful” Saba Saba Day, saying enhanced law enforcement helped prevent widespread violence and destruction.

In a statement issued Monday evening, Murkomen acknowledged the significance of Saba Saba in Kenya’s democratic journey, calling it a “turning point in our country’s pursuit of multi-party democracy, order and better governance.”

“Kenyans have the right to mark this day in peace and decency,” he said.

Murkomen, who made a tour of various police deployment points across Nairobi, commended officers for maintaining calm and protecting lives and property. He noted that violence and looting witnessed during previous protests had significantly declined.

“Thanks to their efforts and other officers across the country, incidents of violence, looting and destruction of property were markedly reduced today compared to last week,” he stated.

However, the CS raised concerns over what he described as the growing trend of criminal elements infiltrating legitimate demonstrations. He said such actors were behind the chaos witnessed during the June 25 protests, adding that those responsible had already been arraigned.

“Likewise, those responsible for today’s incidents will also be investigated and charged,” he added.

Murkomen defended the government’s decision to enforce heightened security in major towns, including Nairobi, which saw restricted access to the city centre.

“While the inconvenience faced in accessing places of work today is regrettable, the heightened security measures were necessary to ensure the safety of our people and the security of their property and businesses,” he said.

His remarks come amid increased scrutiny over police conduct, with opposition leader Raila Odinga earlier calling for urgent police reforms to curb excessive force and restore public confidence.
