Manchester City snatched a late victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers, thanks to John Stones’ crucial header deep in stoppage time.
Just as it appeared City would drop two valuable points in the title race, the England defender rose above Wolves’ Craig Dawson in the dying moments to secure a 1-0 win.
Initially, Stones’ goal was disallowed as offside against Bernardo Silva, who had positioned himself in front of goalkeeper José Sá.
However, after a review of the play on the VAR monitor by referee Chris Kavanagh, the decision was reversed, and the goal was awarded to ecstatic celebrations from Pep Guardiola and his City players.
Kavanagh deemed that Silva was not interfering with play, igniting further controversy and frustration from the Wolves camp.
Wolves manager Gary O’Neil expressed disbelief at the turnaround, reflecting on a summer in which the club sought to have VAR reconsidered following similar incidents in the past. Last season, Wolves were also on the receiving end of a controversial disallowed goal. The home fans voiced their displeasure as they witnessed a well-executed game plan unravel in the final moments.
This result leaves Manchester City two points clear at the top of the Premier League, while Wolves remain at the bottom of the table with just one point from eight matches. O’Neil’s players demonstrated grit and determination, but ultimately they were left empty-handed in a match they had fought diligently to control.
