In a stunning upset, Lille secured a 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano, with substitute Jonathan David proving to be the match-winner.
The Canadian forward scored two late goals, including a controversial penalty in the 71st minute that shifted the momentum in Lille’s favor.
The decision to award the spot-kick came after Koke made minimal contact with Benjamin Andre, provoking heated protests from Atletico players and a VAR review that upheld the referee’s call.
David calmly converted the penalty, giving Lille a 2-1 lead after Edon Zhegrova had equalized with a brilliant curl over Jan Oblak just minutes prior. To put the game out of reach, David added his second in the 89th minute, with a shot that deflected off a defender to wrongfoot the Atletico goalkeeper.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Lille, reflecting their strong performance in the Champions League, having previously defeated Real Madrid.
In contrast, Diego Simeone’s Atletico side continues to struggle, now with only one win from three matches, as they prepare for a challenging trip to Paris St-Germain in November.
