Journalists protest against attacks and threats to press freedom

Journalists across the country on Wednesday united in a protest march to condemn police brutality against members of the media.

Brandishing placards, the demonstrators accused the police of shooting and abducting journalists during the course of their official duties.

The protest comes in the wake of several reports of journalists being injured while covering recent anti-government protests.

The journalists called for justice and highlighted that these attacks are a direct attempt to muzzle the press.

This comes after Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, a Radio/TV reporter with Media Max, was shot three times in the thigh in a blatant attack on the press.

She was identifiable as she wore a press jacket, had a media tag and a branded microphone.

She was taken to Valley Hospital for first aid and thereafter referred to Rift Valley Provincial Hospital annexe for surgery.

All the three rubber bullets that were lodged in her thigh were removed and medics said she is responding well to treatment.
