The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has announced 150 new job openings in the Judiciary, targeting judges, magistrates, and kadhis, in what appears to be a major recruitment drive to bolster the administration of justice in Kenya.
According to a public notice issued by the Commission, there are 45 positions available for judges: 15 in the Court of Appeal, 20 in the High Court, and 10 in the Environment and Land Court (ELC). Additionally, the JSC is seeking to fill 60 positions for resident magistrates, five for resident kadhis, and 40 for Small Claims Court adjudicators, who may also serve as resident magistrates.
The announcement follows a gazette notice issued by Chief Justice Martha Koome on June 3, officially declaring the judicial vacancies pursuant to the Judicial Service Act. In the notice, CJ Koome cited the need to strengthen the court system, almost a year after the government imposed a 15% budget cut that led to a freeze on judicial recruitments.
“Pursuant to Section 30 of the Judicial Service Act and Section 3, Part II of the First Schedule of the Judicial Service Act, 2011, I, Martha Karambu Koome, Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya, for and on behalf of the Judiciary of Kenya, declare vacancies in the Office of Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Republic of Kenya,” the notice stated.
Interested applicants have until June 30, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. to submit their applications through the JSC’s official website, where detailed job descriptions, requirements, and instructions are available.
“All applications should reach the Commission not later than June 30, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. Only shortlisted and successful candidates will be contacted. Canvassing in any form will lead to automatic disqualification,” the JSC cautioned.
This development signals a resumption of normal recruitment activities within the Judiciary and a step toward addressing the backlog of cases and improving access to justice nationwide.
