A directive by the ruling party to purge members who have joined the breakaway United Democratic Alliance is an excercise in futility.
Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu has now said that her office cannot begin the process of removing elected leaders who resign from political parties that supported them in the last election.
This is after the Jubilee Party sought to purge members from its register, for joining the UDA Party.
In the National Delegates Council, the party signed off a resolution to purge members who had deserted the party.
With less than two weeks before the deadline for political parties to increase membership recruiting ahead of the general election, the Registrar of Political Parties has been busy collecting and processing requests for party allegiance transfers.
“It’s a process that might begin with switching from one political party to another. However, there are several more mechanisms. For this office, we wish to focus primarily on political rights… Kenyans have the right to switch political parties… “Other government institutions should do their part,” she said.
The daunting task may have equally been null as the constitution does not allow by-elections within three months of a general election.
