The mysterious disappearance and reappearance of Juja MP George Koimburi has ignited a political and security storm, following chilling video footage showing the legislator unconscious in a tea plantation in Kiambu County.
According to a statement from National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the MP was being sought for arrest after the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) approved charges related to a land fraud case.
Police claim Koimburi evaded capture on Friday, May 23, escaping on a motorbike with his bodyguard and switching off his phone.
“He resurfaced today amid claims of abduction. Police visited the alleged scene and documented it. A DCI team is investigating the incident and the video in circulation,” said Nyaga, adding that the police suspect the MP staged his own abduction.
An amateur video circulating widely online shows Koimburi in a navy blue suit—reportedly the same one he wore when he was last seen on Sunday—lying motionless in a Kibichoi tea farm.
He has since been admitted to Karen Hospital with reported soft tissue injuries.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, visiting the MP at the hospital, alleged Koimburi had been chemically subdued, affecting his ability to speak.
“He was tortured by professionals,” Gachagua claimed, “and doctors confirmed he was administered a substance affecting his vocal cords.”
Koimburi’s wife, Ann, alleged that he was abducted outside a church by plainclothes men in a Subaru Forester with false number plates. She claimed the abductors did not identify themselves and forced him into the vehicle.
The unfolding drama has raised sharp questions about political targeting, misuse of state machinery, and Kenya’s worsening climate of fear.
