Juja MP George Koimburi, Two Others Charged in Sh10 Million Land Fraud Case

Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi Ndung’u has been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts over allegations of fraud in a land deal valued at Sh10 million.

Koimburi appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Robinson Ondieki, where he was charged alongside Shelmith Karungiri Maina and lawyer Gathii Irungu. The three are accused of conspiring to defraud Julius Gitonga Githinji of a 1.3-hectare parcel of land in Ruiru East/Juja East Block 2/36, valued at Sh10 million, on or before March 2020.

The legislator faced four counts: conspiracy to defraud land, forgery of sale agreement and purpoting it to be genuine, obtaining land registration by false pretences, and uttering false land documents. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Through his counsel, Koimburi urged the court to release him on a free bond, arguing that he was not a flight risk, had consistently availed himself before the court, and risked losing his parliamentary seat if he missed more than eight consecutive sittings. The defence further claimed that the MP had already settled the matter with the complainant and that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had issued a letter requesting a review of the case.

The court heard that the complainant, Julius Gitonga, was present in court and expressed willingness to withdraw the case. However, the prosecution opposed the application for free bond, stating they had no objection to Koimburi being released on lenient bail terms instead.

Magistrate Ondieki released Koimburi on a cash bail of Sh100,000. His co-accused, Shelmith Karungiri, had already secured release on similar bail terms, while lawyer Gathii Irungu, said to be out of the country, is yet to take plea.

The matter will be mentioned on October 22, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., for pre-trial and to confirm the status of the third accused.
