Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi has been detained at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road under unclear circumstances.
Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa first broke the news on Tuesday morning, stating on social media, “DCI at it again. They have arrested Juja MP George Koimburi. Reason? They are yet to say!”
Thang’wa confirmed that Koimburi was intercepted by DCI detectives while heading to Parliament.
The lawmaker reportedly managed to call him while being taken to the Kiambu Road headquarters but was not informed of the reason for his detention.
According to city lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, who is representing Koimburi, the MP was arrested over remarks he made at the weekend concerning President William Ruto.
Koimburi had accused the President of allegedly spending Ksh 13 billion of public funds to secure votes for Raila Odinga’s failed bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
“Where did the Ksh13 billion go? Why was such a large amount allocated to a losing campaign when it could have been better utilized for the completion of stalled government projects across the country,” he stated.
Koimburi is not new to controversial remarks. In June 2024, he alleged that MPs were offered Ksh 2 million each to vote in favor of the Finance Bill 2024.
“We were offered money… you saw how they carried money in sacks. We were told that for every yes vote, we would receive Ksh 2 million,” he said during a church service.
However, Koimburi later apologized to his fellow MPs in Parliament, acknowledging that his allegations lacked evidence.
The arrest has sparked concerns over political suppression, with allies of the MP calling for his immediate release and clarity on the charges against him.
