Julien Alfred Makes History with Gold Medal at Olympic Games

In a monumental achievement for St. Lucia, 23-year-old sprinter Julien Alfred secured the nation’s first Olympic gold medal by triumphing in the 100-meter event at the ongoing Olympic Games.

Competing on a rain-soaked track, Alfred outpaced the heavily favored Team USA athlete Sha’Carri Richardson, clocking an impressive time of 10.72 seconds—making her the eighth fastest woman in history.

“I don’t ever see me celebrate like that ever,” Alfred expressed in disbelief after her incredible victory. Inspired by her idol, Usain Bolt, she joyfully rang a bell to celebrate, echoing moments she had seen throughout her life.

Trailing Alfred, Richardson claimed the silver with a time of 10.87 seconds, while fellow American Melissa Jefferson took home the bronze with a finish of 10.92 seconds.

The race unfolded amid unexpected twists, including the withdrawal of Jamaican sprinting icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who had not started despite qualifying for the semi-finals, leaving fans puzzled.

Reflecting on her achievement, Alfred remarked, “It means a lot to me, my coach, my country, which I’m sure is celebrating now.” St. Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip Pierre, congratulated her on social media, celebrating the historic moment for the small island nation.

Alfred also hopes her victory will inspire improvements in athletics resources back home.

“Growing up, I used to run barefoot with no shoes. I hope this gold medal will help St. Lucia build a new stadium to promote and grow the sport,” she said.
