ANC’s Cleophas Malala has conceded defeat in the Kakamega Governor race.
ODM party candidate Fernandes Barasa has been declared Kakamega Governor-elect with 192,929 votes, while his counterpart Malala came second with 159,508 votes.
Speaking after the announcement of the result by IEBC on Tuesday, August 30, Malala applauded the electoral body for the good work, saying the election was free and fair.
“Tumekubali kama vichwa vyetu viko juu zaidi. Nawapongeza wapinzani wangu Fernandez Barasa na Ayub Savula. Hakuna kura iliibiwa Kakamega County napongeza IEBC Kwa kazi nzuri (We accept the results with our heads high. I congratulate my competitors Fernandes Barasa and his deputy Ayub Savula. No vote was stolen in Kakamega County and because of that we commend IEBC for the good work),” Malala said.
The election, which was postponed twice by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), saw a low voter turnout.
Barasa won all of the constituencies in the southern region and two more in the northern region, while Malala won all of the constituencies in the central and northern regions.
Malala congratulated Barasa, calling the victory deserved and unassailable.
He stated that he was willing to offer any part of his manifesto that Barasa may find suitable in their new government for the advancement of Kakamega.
Malala thanked his campaign team and expressed pride in making it to the ballot.
He expressed interest in working with the new county boss to move Kakamega forward and also expressed his gratitude to the people of Kakamega who voted for him..
