Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has refuted claims that there is unauthorized logging inside the Kakamega forest.
This is after a video surfaced of a now-infamous lorry LT13 seen logging alongside tractors.
KFS said the video was taken at Chemususu Forest, Baringo County & not Kakamega forest as reported.
“The misreporting is malicious and aimed at distorting facts in order to provoke unsuspecting citizens & high-ranking personalities, some of whom have shown interest in the conservation of Kakamega forest.”
The forest manager said the tree harvesting was necezzary to avoid rotting.
“KFS would like to confirm that the activity captured in these social media post depict ongoing harvesting of over-mature exotic pine species in a forest plantation.”
“This entails felling, skidding, stacking and loading of round logs onto trucks for transportation to the sawmill industry for conversion into desired end products.”
The uproar came after President William Ruto lifted the ban on logging to promote local wood work and industries.
The move was met with backlash as environment experts took to social media claiming the government is blind to effects of climate change.
