Residents of Lumakanda village in Kakamega county were furious after learning that a cow stolen from a resident’s homestead was in the custody of a police officer.
They pounced on the officer, accusing him of fleeing with the animal while using police resources.
On Thursday, Morgan, a boda boda rider, said he saw the police officer unloading the cow from a police vehicle and taking it to a stream, and he alerted villagers because the victim had raised the alarm about his stolen cow.
According to residents within the area, cow dung was found in the officer’s car while at a car wash.
“The police car had cow dung so it was surprising to me. How is it that a police car had cow dung?” one resident posed.
The presence of cow dung in the car was enough for the residents to narrow down their suspects to the officer that was driving the vehicle.
Lugari sub-county police commander Bernard Ngungu said that investigations will be conducted and appropriate legal action would be taken.
“If our officer is found to have been involved in the matter, we are going to take administrative action. He may have taken the car without permission so we will deal with him departmentally,” he said.
The stolen cow was discovered in Webuye town, Bungoma county.
