Police in Kakamega are investigating an incident in which the decomposing body of a middle-aged man was found at his home, weeks after he had reportedly sold a plot of land.
The assistant chief of the Eshibikhwa area, Emmanuel Shikanda, confirmed the incident.
According to Vitalis Mulunga, a neighbor familiar with the situation, they were alerted to the discovery of the body by the assistant chief and immediately sought assistance from the local police.
Neighbors had reported a foul smell emanating from the house, and upon closer inspection, they found Fredrick Imbugwa’s body lying in bed. Police officers from Shikhoti responded to the scene and transferred the body to a facility in Kakamega as investigations commenced.
Mr. Imbugwa’s family told the media they believe he took his own life after claiming to have lost money to the woman he was living with.
“When we asked the family, they said the deceased had sold a piece of land, but he had called his sister saying he would end his life because the woman he was living with had stolen his money,” said Mulunga, a neighbor.
Before his body was discovered, the deceased had reportedly sold a portion of his land. He later claimed to have lost the money to his estranged lover during a phone conversation with his sister, in which he also threatened to take his own life.
The family is now awaiting the results of a postmortem examination to uncover the truth behind their relative’s death.
