Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged Azimio la Umoja coalition leaders to occupy the majority seats in Parliament following a High Court ruling that declared President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition is not the House’s majority.
A three-judge bench, comprising of Justice John Chigiti, Lawrence Mugambi, and Jairus Ngaah, ruled that the Kenya Kwanza coalition cannot claim seniority status, dealing a major blow to Ruto’s leadership.
Kalonzo has called on Azimio coalition leaders to occupy the majority side of the House on Tuesday, pending official leadership changes. He argues that the court has pronounced Azimio as the majority party.
“This is the truth, Azimio is the majority in Parliament,” Kalonzo said at a roadside rally in Malindi on Sunday. “We will sit on the majority side of the House because the court has pronounced itself.”
Kalonzo’s call comes as he launches a fresh bid to topple President Ruto’s leadership ahead of the 2027 General Election. The Wiper leader believes Ruto’s unpopularity is growing, and his term extension is under threat.
“You can see how Ruto is very unpopular,” Kalonzo noted, referencing President Ruto’s recent encounter with a harsh crowd in Isiolo.
The High Court ruling has significant implications for the leadership structure in Parliament, raising questions about the legitimacy of decisions made under Kenya Kwanza’s assumed majority status.
In response to the ruling, Speaker Moses Wetangula has dismissed claims that he has to vacate his position as Speaker or cease being the Party Leader of Ford Kenya party.
He described the ruling as mere “ordinary comments” in law that are non-binding and have no practical effect.
