The leadership of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance has accused President William Ruto of failing to address important issues affecting the country in his inaugural address.
Azimio co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka told the media on Friday that Ruto had broken campaign promises, including lowering the cost of living.
The Wiper party leader accused Ruto of exploiting the country’s dire economic situation to assure Kenyans of paradise, but none of this has been reflected.
“The first campaign promise was to the lowering of the cost of living. From Day I, all costs associated with basic living have gone up. The price of unga and the cost of electricity are beyond the ordinary wananchi’s reach. These ore matters we feel should take pre-eminence in these early days,” Kalonzo said.
“Just like there was the rush to subsidize fertilizer on 19th September 2022, the same urgency should have first and foremost been applied to the rapidly rising cost of living.”
Azimio stated that it had directed allied legislators to launch an investigation into how the government procured the subsidized fertilizer.
Kalonzo pointed out that some of Ruto’s Cabinet Secretary nominees have criminal records and will ask their legislators not to approve them.
“This was not procedurally done, on the basis of competencies and personal integrity and we shall direct our MPs to withhold approval of those who do not meet the Chapter Six threshold of our Constitution.”
The opposition also reiterated their earlier stance that the electoral agency should be reformed.
“We must also reform IEBC to give our children a free and fair election. Even the Judiciary must also be reformed.”
Despite losing the election, Azimio la Umoja – OKA’s transformative agenda remains, according to Kalonzo.
“We are re-energized, revitalized and rejuvenated to ensure that the hopes and aspirations of the Kenyan people will be at the top of our agenda,” he said.
