Wiper leader and United Opposition principal Kalonzo Musyoka has raised serious concerns about the credibility of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), stating that the commission is widely perceived as partisan.
In a statement posted on his X account on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Kalonzo revealed that the United Opposition met with IEBC officials to address critical issues affecting electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“This evening, the United Opposition met with IEBC officials to raise serious concerns about the credibility of the Commission,” Kalonzo stated.
Kalonzo revealed that the United Opposition expressed strong dissatisfaction with the procurement process for the Kenya Integrated Elections Management System (KIEMS) kit.
“We also expressed strong dissatisfaction with the procurement process of the KIEMS kit and stated clearly that we do not want Smartmatic, a company associated with election irregularities in multiple countries, anywhere near the systems for the 2027 General Election,” he stated.
The opposition also raised questions about the continued tenure of IEBC Chief Executive Officer Marjan Hussein Marjan.
“In addition, we raised concerns over the continued stay of the IEBC CEO, Marjan Hussein Marjan, outlining the reasons for our lack of confidence in his leadership,” Kalonzo said.
The United Opposition leader warned that public perception of the electoral body is deteriorating.
“We made it clear that, in its current form, the IEBC is widely perceived as a William Ruto commission. This is not just our position as the opposition, but a growing national perception, and we challenged the Commission to prove otherwise through its actions,” he said.
The Wiper leader concluded by emphasising the need for the commission to take decisive action to restore public trust.
“We expect transparency, accountability and decisive action if public trust in the electoral process is to be restored,” he stated.
